Job Role: Director Statistics Department

Job Profile:
The position requires a top-rank statistician/economist with cutting edge competencies in statistics/economics, econometrics, economic statistics and monetary and financial statistics. Reporting directly to the Deputy Governor, Economic Policy, the Director of Statistics will play a leadership role in the compilation and collation of monetary, financial and other economic statistics, ensuring data integrity, dissemination to general public and international organizations, coordinating the collaborative statistical activities with other statistics generating agencies, including the Data Warehouse project, as well as the design and implementation of a statistics policy for the Bank, amongst others.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Advise the Deputy Governor, Economic Policy on statistics policy/ programmes for the Bank.
  • Advise the Deputy Governor, Economic Policy periodically on necessary changes in the Bank’s short, medium and long-term policies, and the likely impact of the policy changes on existing statistical methodologies/infrastructure.
  • Participate in collaborative statistical activities with external statistical agencies and other institutions.
  • Ensure timely publication of the Statistical Bulletin and other related statistical publications of the Bank.
  • Provide the final data, estimates/projections for the CBN Annual Report and Statement of Accounts and other reports of the Bank.
  • Provide the final data, estimates/projections for the CBN input into the Federal Government Budget and State of the Nation Report.
  • Ensure data integrity through efficient and effective data gathering, verification, validation, analysis and management.
  • Appraise current issues in statistics for top management.
  • Act as liaison between the CBN and other stakeholders within the National Statistical System.
  • Liaise with National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), National Population Commission (NPC), and Federal Ministries/Agencies, IMF, World Bank, International Statistical Institute and Irving Fisher Committee on Central Banking Statistics, etc; towards ensuring the development and strengthening of the statistical system.
  • Ensure timely submission of data to the IMF Statistics Department for inclusion in such publications as the International Financial Statistics (IFS), etc.
  • Ensure that CBN remain current in the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS).
  • Initiate the process and collaborate with the NBS for the country’s subscription to the IMF Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) and any other related data system including the National Data Warehouse.
  • Prepare a properly articulated and structured strategic statistics plan for the Bank.
  • Provide administrative leadership to the Statistics Department in terms of coordinating and supervising all its activities.
  • Develop clear performance measures for all statistics processes as well as targets for all grades of staff.

Qualification & Experience:

  • A Masters Degree in Statistics or Economics with strong flair for Statistics and a proven ability to perform the tasks required of the position. Possession of a PhD will be an advantage.
  • A first degree in Statistics with a post-graduate degree in Economics or related discipline.
  • 15 years cognate experience in statistics/economic research, of which 8 years should be at senior management level.
  • Outstanding publication record in statistics/economics and related disciplines with a minimum of 15 research papers, out of which 10 must have been published in refereed and reputed journals.
  • Membership of the Nigerian Statistical Association; Nigerian Economic Society and/or other similar professional bodies.
